New Bodog Season Starts Tonight

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

BodogFightIf you haven’t had a chance to check out BodogFight yet, you should.  Why?  The fighters are of solid and it’s free!

Tonight (at 11pm) kicks off the production’s 4th season with two fights:

Lightweights
Nick Agallar (17-4) vs. Ryan Bow (17-8-1)
Agallar is a 27-year-old Wisconsin native who fought in the first series of Bodog Fight, knocking out Nardu Debrah in the second round. Now, after being KO’d by Vladimir Zenin in Bodog Fight: USA vs. Russia, Agallar is on the comeback trail as he returns to Costa Rica to fight the 29-year-old Bow.  An extremely agile fighter with lightning fast hands, Agallar is also a capable wrestler and Jiu-Jitsu practitioner from Dave Strasser’s Freestyle Academy.

Born in Michigan, Ryan Bow is a former Shooto Champion who is new to Bodog Fight. The son of a wrestler, he moved to Japan in 1997 at age 17 to pursue a career in MMA. Eight years later, Bow became one of the first black men to open a dojo in Tokyo. Needless to say, the Kaminari Dojo (which translates to “lightning/thunder”) founder is well versed in the martial arts.  “I’ve studied Jow Gar Kung Fu, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Judo, and Muay Thai among other things,” says Bow. “But I think MMA is the truest form of combat - a sport in which one can truly express himself.”

Light Heavyweights
David Avellan (1-0) vs. Antony “The Wild Thing” Rea (11-7)
25-year-old David Avellan is another dojo founder making his Bodog Fight debut. The Florida native has joined forces with his brother Marcus to form the Freestyle Fighting Academy, which is poised to rival American Top Team as Miami’s top choice for aspiring MMA athletes. Like his brother, David is an ADCC World Championship Qualifier well versed in submissions, although he doesn’t mind going toe-to-toe with his opponents.

Antony “The Wild Thing” Rea hails from France, where MMA is still illegal. As a result the 30-year-old grappler is used to fighting internationally, which could work to his advantage. He’s certainly well versed in MMA, having sparred with fellow Bodog Fight veteran Kristof “Hurricane Midoux and K-1 kickboxing legend Jerome Banner at the Elite Training Centre.

Mark Burnett Could Invest $50 Million into ProElite

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Pro Elite continues to gain ground on MMA juggernaut UFC with recent news that it has teamed up with reality show juggernaut Mark Burnett (The Producer of Survivor and The Apprentice).

The terms of the deal actually go for beyond simply producing yet another reality series (that happens to center around mixed martial artists):

“The pact between ProElite and Mark Burnett Prods. calls for Burnett’s company to produce the potential series, whose contestants would be signed by ProElite. The companies would pursue Internet extensions on ProElite’s Web sites and would share revenue from their joint endeavors, including pay-per-view events.

As part of the deal, Burnett gets the right to buy up to 17 million shares of ProElite at $3 a share in eight tranches tied to the success of their joint efforts.

Sources said that ProElite had approached Burnett to collaborate on expanding its MMA business into television and other mediums. It is understood that there is no concept for the primetime series yet, and talks about any joint media ventures between Burnett and ProElite remain in the exploration stage.”

Idiot MMA Fan

Monday, June 25th, 2007

After watching this YouTube video I was forced to create a new category on this site dedicated to MMA fans who are just plain moronic/comical/entertaining.  It’s great to have fans who are big supporters of mixed martial arts but some go just a bit too far.  Reggie Warren Jr., you my friend are the very first Idiot MMA Fan.   Congratulations.

Kimbo vs Mercer Play-By-Play

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Here is the fight as called by a an MMA fan on 411Mania:

“Crowd chants for Kimbo. Mercer comes out to “Momma Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J. Mixed cheers and boos for Mercer but most people want to see Kimbo. Kimbo comes out to “This Is Why I’m Hot”, clearly showing Melvin Guillard’s cultural influence. Everyone is on their feet. Cheers drown out boos when Mercer is announced, but the crowd is erupting for Kimbo. They only announce him as “Kimbo” without the Slice. What happened? They jaw a bit during the standoff, crowd is on fire.

Round 1

Kimbo charges in, goes right for a takedown. Mercer grabs the cage but he goes down. Mercer up, they fight in the clinch. Big knees by Kimbo land. Mercer strikes but Kimbo answers with a combo and gets a double leg. Kimbo fighting, gets Mercer in to a choke. Mercer taps. Kimbo Slice wins by guillotine choke submission in round 1.

Crowd chants for Kimbo, it really looks like Mercer didn’t train properly for this at all. Kimbo seems to need work himself but the important thing is he got rid of his pride and went with what worked. Hardly a technical showcase, but hell, it was only an exhibition. Kimbo sits on the cage, raising his arms in victory. Tank Abbott is up now, approaching the ring. He congratulates Kimbo. Tank looks like he’s calling Kimbo out, points at him but they’re being respectful. That’s surprising. Kimbo calls out to the crowd, says he was training for MMA. He calls Tank out, says they have to talk and make the fight happen. They are starting to get aggressive, the crowd loves it and calls for Tank to jump the cage. Tank looks like he’s going to do it. CFFC suits say the fight will happen.”
