Matt Lindland Predicts Couture Victory..and More

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Matt Lindland InterviewMatt Lindland talked with Bodog Nation this week.  It was a good interview and Lindland had a lot of interesting things to say not only about himself, but about other fighers as well.  Some of his thoughts:

On Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
“I really think that is a perfect match-up for Randy. The guy is a lot younger, possibly more athletic and he’s bigger, but stylistically, I don’t see Randy staying on the outside with that kid. I don’t see him submitting Randy, and I just see Randy doing what he does really well: closing the distance, dirty boxing, putting him on his back and hitting him with punches and elbows.”

On Fedor holding the ropes during their fight
“It’s not his job to follow the rules. It’s the referee’s job to enforce the rules.”

On UFC title contender Rich Franklin
“I would beat Rich Franklin pretty bad. My style matches up very poorly for Rich. He wouldn’t know what to do with the kind of fighter I am.”

On his relationship with Bodog
“I have a three-fight contract with Bodog and weight is not an issue. I want to fight guys that are top-10-in-the-world type of guys. I don’t want to fight bums.”

On UFC Champion Anderson Silva
“I think Anderson is a phenomenally technical stand-up fighter. He picks his shots well and he’s patient. He waits and he lands a couple good punches and starts rattling guys and he follows through on them. He’s good at what he does. I think there are some holes in his game that I could capitalize on personally. There’s a ton of other fighters out there that could beat him, aside from myself.”

Screwy Fighter Rankings on MMAUniverse

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

First off, MMA Universe is a great resource for mixed martial arts coverage, so no disrespect to them.  However, their fighter ranking system is all out of whack.  It’s great to allow the fans of the sport to cast their votes and have a say in fighter rankings but you run the risk of your list not being a truly legit indicator of how fighters stack up.  Case in point:  For their top 10 Light Heavyweights in the world, Aaron Hughes is #2, Karl Morrison is #5, and Mikko Rupponen is #8.  Who, who, and who?  Check out the complete list here and maybe cast a vote for a real contenter.

BJJ Key to a Gonzaga Win Says His Trainer

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Gonzaga trains with Marco AlvanIn a recent interivew with Gabriel Gonzaga’s trainer, Marco Alvan, he told the Boston Herold that Gonza is going to submit Randy Couture.  In quote, “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will be the key for this fight. Definitely this fight will go to the ground, and when it gets there, Gabriel will apply his skills and he is going to submit Randy. “

Other comments:
On Gonzaga’s fight with Mirko Cro Cop, “The big part of the victory over Mirko was the strategy. Our team knew exactly what Mirko was going to bring for that fight, and what exactly we should do to stop that. Then it was just applying the game plan that (Mirko) never saw before.”
