Evan Tanner Sinks a Boat
The fact that ex-UFC Champion Evan Tanner sunk his boat on September 10th isn’t really “breaking” MMA news, but what is of interest is that the boat he sunk was a classic 1939 Tahiti 30-foot wooden ketch that he purchased. Who would have thought of Tanner as such boating enthusiast? According to The Log (a boating blog), “Tanner had the hull restored and painted at an Oceanside boatyard, and recently replaced the boat’s engine. He was sailing out of Oceanside Harbor - where he had stayed the maximum permissible time at guest docks - in hopes of finding another place to dock the boat. While he was under way in heavy swell, the boat began taking on water and the bilge pump stopped working.”
Tanner said, “we were miles out, desperately bailing out water. We made it into Mission Bay as night fell. Being unfamiliar with the bay, and finding it difficult to navigate in the dark, we ran aground. I stayed up all night, much of it spent down in the hold in the cold water, trying to save her. I tried, but I couldn’t do it. She was hurt too much.”
