A Strawweight Division?

straw-weight.jpgThe Nevada State Athletic Commission just revised their regulations proposal and I decided to browse through the 25 page document relating to the governance of mixed martial arts.  One thing that caught my attention was their definition and establishments of weight classes.  Here is a new one I’ve never heard of.  105lbs or less is called a Strawweight.  If I’m that little I probably already have a chip on my shoulder.  Calling me a “Straw Weight” doesn’t seem too help the cause.  How about “paperweight.”

Another thing that caught my eye is their proposal to change the rules regarding the amount of weight a fighter can lose after a weigh-in.  If you are above 147lbs under the existing guidelines, you have two hours to lose up to 3 lbs.  Now, you would only have one hour and cannot lose more than 2lbs after the initial weigh-in.  Doesn’t sound like a huge deal, but the MMA fighters today rely on losing a lot of weight in order to fight in lower weight divisions.  I wonder if we’ll see an increase in fighters not being able to make weight at MMA events.  Surely Dana White won’t be a fan of this.
