BJ Penn Punches Cop Gets One Year Probation
Today a Honolulu newspaper reported that BJ was sentenced to one year of probation for hitting a police officer back in 2005. As part of his sentance, the UFC star must abstain from alcohol, submit to substance-abuse treatment, perform 50 hours of community service and submit to random drug and alcohol tests.
“I want to thank the fans for the support and for sticking by me through thick and thin,” said Penn, speaking outside of court yesterday. “It’s time to move on with my life and focus on my career. I’m glad it’s done.”
According to Penn’s attorney,
“This was 3 in the morning and hundreds of people were at Zanzabar (nightclub) to celebrate BJ and there was probably too much alcohol involved although my client was not inebriated. I believe he remains an outstanding model for young people.”
So what the hell happened back in 2005 to get Penn in all of this trouble? According to the newspaper article, BJ allegedly punched a police officer outside the Zanzabar Night Club, which was hosting a post-event party for a professional fight card at the Blaisdell Center Arena. Penn allegedly hit Pouoa, a uniformed police officer who was on a special-duty assignment at the party for the participants of the “Rumble on the Rock 7″ mixed martial arts competition. At the time police said Pouoa, who was hit in the face, and another officer working at the club had gone outside to break up a fight among a large group of men. Police said the officers used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
Penn, whom police said was in the crowd, allegedly hit Pouoa with a blind-side punch to his left eye and tried to run away, police said. Pouoa ran after Penn and tackled him, but was immediately jumped by several other men in the crowd who tried to pull the officer off Penn, police said. At that moment, District 6 patrol officers arrived, pulled the men off Pouoa and arrested Penn on suspicion of assaulting a law-enforcement officer in the first degree, a Class C felony. The charge was later reduced to third-degree assault.

Penn only probably weighed 160-170, cop was probably alot bigger. Penn is a great fighter but being drunk doest help if the dude was alot bigger. I did have respect for BJ Penn before he sucker punched a cop just trying to do his job. You got to be a real pussy to sucker punch a guy and then run away and let your friends protect you when the cops catch you. On an average there is approximately 250 cops that are killed in the line of duty every year protecting people. And a rich / famous MMA fighter assaults a hero and gets a slap on the wrist. I’m a cop and a fighter and I think that this type of drunken behavior is why MMA has a bad name and non fighters think of MMA as a bunch of thugs. There not but they don’t know it, thanks to BJ Penn.

What happened that night to start the big brawl outside the bar was BJ Penn sucker punched my boy. He ran off right after hittin’ my boy so I cocked him good. Me and my boy got jumped by his posse….we mopped them up just the two of us. Fight got all the way outside but we didn’t see BJ anywhere….we were too busy moppin’ his boys up. The bouncers pulled the two of us back. Suddenly we saw a few take off after BJ and the cop. There were at least 25 of them, about a dozen on the ground. BJ is a little bitch! Hits like a girl. I cocked his ass good when he was tryin’ to run after he hit my boy. But it was the two of us movin’ the crowd outside, not them backin’ us up. He had a posse full of pussies.
