Fedor Claims Responsibility for Cro-Cop’s Downfall

Friday, December 21st, 2007

As mentioned the other day, there was a long article about Fedor Emelianenko that appeared on Esquire.com. This quote in particular jumped out at me,

“He has to regenerate psychologically. After my fight with him, he just broke down. In his soul, something just broke down, cracked…There are some psychological problems when you have all the time fight, fight, fight, without rest.”

If you look back at Cro Cop’s last couple of fights (two big UFC losses) you can definiely see that he was not the same fighter as he was pre-Fedor fight. However, he did smash Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett on his way to winning the Pride Grand Prix title post-Fedor fight. So I’m not sure if I buy what Fedor is selling 100%.

Joe Rogan is Now Sleeping Better

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

sleepy2.jpgJoe Rogan used to snore like a demon farting into a tuba (and yes, those are his words). Now a days, The UFC mouthpiece is getting some of the most refreshing sleep of his life. Why do I share this with you? Because maybe you too suffer from the same affliction as Rogan, sleep apnea. I guess you could say I’m providing a little public service here. Rogan is so passionate about this that he dedicated an entire post on his blog about the situation.

For the last few nights I’ve been having some of the most refreshing sleep, and the clearest, most vivid dreams of my entire life, and I have this incredible new reserve of energy. It’s all because I found out recently that I’ve got sleep apnea, and I got fitted with this special mouthpiece that keeps my airway clear while I’m sleeping. This has apparently been a huge problem most of my life that I’m really just starting to become aware of.

UFC Hawking Octagon Necklace

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Hey all you extra tight Affliction tshirt wearers, now you too can own your very own Octagon Necklace as worn by the fighters on The Ultimate Fighter. Just in time for the holidays, the UFC is schlepping this piece of pewter and leather for $16.95 (plus shipping). I shouldn’t dis, I’m sure there are plenty of MMA fans out there who would be proud to sport this thing around their necks. I guess I’m just not one of those guys.

You can buy it here.

Fedor on Esquire.com

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

“Can undefeated martial artist Fedor Emelianenko single-handedly knock out the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s dominance over the emerging sport?”

This is the question posed by Esquire magazine writer Sean Cunningham in his article that appeared on www.esquire.com today. It a pretty bold assertion and I’ll answer his question. No. As great as Fedor is, the UFC will remain alive, well, and on top in the USA for a while (like it or not). What is interesting is that the somewhat mainstream media is highlighting a MMA fighter from a different country and a different MMA organization than the UFC. Sure, many mixed martial artists have graced many magazines but for the most part all of them have been UFC fighters (Hughes, Huerta, GSP, Serra, Couture, and Liddell are the biggest that come to mind). Is the media trying to stir up controversy? Is it possible that the UFC is starting to piss off the media? And if so, could this move to spotlight fighters outside of the UFC be payback? I’m going out on a limb, but the fact that Fedor has gotten some media attention here in the state shows that MMA continues to grow and that the UFC may not be as dominant as Dana thinks.

It’s a pretty interesting article, check it out here.

Matt Hughes Not Liked by Ben Rothwell

Monday, December 17th, 2007

IFL’s champ (no former, the IFL is not renewing Ben’s contract) had a long phone interview with Bob Parson of Carson’s Corner. During the interview Ben Rothwell made several unflattering remarks about former teammate and former UFC champion Matt Hughes. Such as, you ask? How about,

To Pat Miletich, “I don’t like the guy. I don’t want him here (in the gym).”

“I can’t say I won’t be happy if St. Pierre gets another head kick through.”

“I never really liked him. He always had a bad attitude.”

And prior Ben made some other remarks on the Sherdog forum a couple of months ago,

“He treats people around him poorly and has no respect. Really when I hear him talk about God and do this and do that and I love my wife, I want to puke you (Hughes) couldn’t look anyone in the face anymore, and you f-ed Monte (Cox) and Pat (Miletich) over and the fucking gym that MADE YOU”

Hughes always seemed like an A-hole on The Ultimate Fighter so none of this comes of a surprise. It’s really unfortunate that Hughes isn’t 35lbs heavier and Rothwell 35lbs lighter cuz it would make for a fun fight.

Here is the full audio from Ben’s interview on Carson’s Corner.
