Rashad Evans vs Jaime Jara

The guy who did this to Rashad Evans will be fighting a Welterweight tomorrow!

This may be a first for the sport of MMA.  Tomorrow at the ShoXC event, the current Gladiator Challenge Middleweight Champion is going to cut weight and will be taking on the current Gladiator Challenge Welterweight Champion.

Jeremiah Metcalf (current Welterweight Champ) was originally scheduled to fight fellow welterweight Aaron Wetherspoon until Wethtespoon suffered a last minute injury.  Jamie Jara (Middleweight Champ) will be stepping up to take Aaron’s place.

This should make for a very interesting fight.  Metcalf might have been better off with his original opponent as his replacement (Jamie Jara) has won 11 out of his last 12 fights.  The one loss was a decision against Rashad Evans.

ShoXC - New MMA Series

Thanks to EliteXC and Showtime, young talented fighters are now going to have their opportunities to showcase their abilities in front of a national crowd.  The two companies have partnered to develop “ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series”, a mixed martial arts series devoted to highlighting up and coming talent.

“This network and our partners at EliteXC have made a long-term committment to developing the sport of professional mixed martial arts,” said Ken Hershman, senior vice president and general manager, Showtime Sports & Event Programming. “ShoXC is one of the most important components to that development. Now, young fighters will have an elite proving ground to showcase their talents on national television. In addition, the fans now can track MMA’s future stars as they develop their fighting style and skills.”

This is great for the sport, no doubt.  Currently in the world of MMA there is finite space for national attention.  There are only so many fighters (no matter how good they my be) you can cram into a UFC card.  This gives that great young fighter who hasn ‘t landed a UFC deal the chance to show millions his skills.  The less monopoly this sport has for nationwide distribution, the better the quality of fighters that will emerge.
