Bad Night for Butterbean and Herb Dean

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Neither American fighter, Butterbean nor Herb Dean, fared well in London this evening at Cage Rage 22.  Both fights had disappointing finishes.  Although Butterbean was on his back like a beached whale, the ref jumped in a couple blows early to the dismay of the rotund fighter.  Herb Dean was unable to start the second round after claiming he could not see out of his right eye.  His eye appeared fine with no swelling our visible damage.  Disappointing way to end the fight.  Complete fight results for Cage Rage 22:

Recap of UFC 73 Preliminary Fights

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

Four fights were not shown on last night’s UFC card.  This is unfortunate because only one of those fights went to a decision (compared to 3 decision bouts on the main card).

UFC Mania covered the dark matches and reported the following:

Stephan Bonnar vs. Mike Nickels
Round one: The two come out and feel each other out, Bonnar throws a kick and Bonner catches it. Bonnar reverses and takes the back of Nickels. He locks in an Americana and transitions to a rear naked choke. Nickels taps. Fight is over. Bonnar is back!
Result: Stephan Bonnar defeats Mike Nickels via submission (rear naked choke) in round one

Jorge Gurgel vs. Diego Saraiva
Round one: Gurgel connects early with a right hook to the side of the head. The action is fast and furious. Gurgel eats a knee in the clinch. Gurgel gets the takedown and mounts Saraiva and dishes out some serious punishment. Gurgel lets him up and the two spar for the last 20 seconds of round one.
Round two: The round begins and Diego lands some solid shots and the two remain on the feet for most of the round. Lots of good exchanges, both fighters are doing well and it is a fairly even exchange throughout. Diego starts to get the better of Gurgel later in the round, Gurgel ties him up and takes Diego down. Diego gets up and continues to get the better of the stand up toward the end of the round. Solid action.
Round three: This round, again, begins with some stand up, which is not what most expected with two Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialists. Diego lands a low blow and the two touch gloves. The fight goes to the ground and Gurgel lands in Diego’s guard, raining down punches. The round ends with a fairly even stand up. Gurgel’s face looks like chopped meat — mouses under both eyes. The decision comes in, and the crowd is not happy. Gurgel via unanimous decision.
Result: Jorge Gurgel defeats Diego Saraiva via unanimous decision

Chris Lytle vs. Jason Gilliam
Round one: Lytle comes out and drops Gilliam immediately. He pounces and begins to dish out some ground and pound. Lytle goes for a leg and Gilliam escapes from a knee bar. Lytle transitions to a wicked reverse triangle and Gilliam taps! Gilliam appears injured and walks out of the ring gingerly.
Result: Chris Lytle defeats Jason Gilliam via submission (triangle choke) in round one

Frank Edgar vs. Mark Bocek
Round one: Both fighters land shots that do considerable damage. Edgar, however, gets the best of the exchanges despite being dropped to one knee during the round. Toward the end of the stanza, Edgar pins Bocek to the ground and rains down punches. Bocek is not defending himself and the referee steps in with five seconds remaining in round one and stops the fight via technical knockout (strikes).
Result: Frank Edgar defeats Mark Bocek via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Kimbo vs Mercer Play-By-Play

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Here is the fight as called by a an MMA fan on 411Mania:

“Crowd chants for Kimbo. Mercer comes out to “Momma Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J. Mixed cheers and boos for Mercer but most people want to see Kimbo. Kimbo comes out to “This Is Why I’m Hot”, clearly showing Melvin Guillard’s cultural influence. Everyone is on their feet. Cheers drown out boos when Mercer is announced, but the crowd is erupting for Kimbo. They only announce him as “Kimbo” without the Slice. What happened? They jaw a bit during the standoff, crowd is on fire.

Round 1

Kimbo charges in, goes right for a takedown. Mercer grabs the cage but he goes down. Mercer up, they fight in the clinch. Big knees by Kimbo land. Mercer strikes but Kimbo answers with a combo and gets a double leg. Kimbo fighting, gets Mercer in to a choke. Mercer taps. Kimbo Slice wins by guillotine choke submission in round 1.

Crowd chants for Kimbo, it really looks like Mercer didn’t train properly for this at all. Kimbo seems to need work himself but the important thing is he got rid of his pride and went with what worked. Hardly a technical showcase, but hell, it was only an exhibition. Kimbo sits on the cage, raising his arms in victory. Tank Abbott is up now, approaching the ring. He congratulates Kimbo. Tank looks like he’s calling Kimbo out, points at him but they’re being respectful. That’s surprising. Kimbo calls out to the crowd, says he was training for MMA. He calls Tank out, says they have to talk and make the fight happen. They are starting to get aggressive, the crowd loves it and calls for Tank to jump the cage. Tank looks like he’s going to do it. CFFC suits say the fight will happen.”
