September IS the Month of MMA

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

We’re used to getting our doses of mixed martial arts in monthly blocks, so 6 events in 4 weeks is surely news worthy. And the best part, 5 of these MMA events are going to be televised for free (that is, if you get Showtime, Spike TV, and Versus channels).  You may want to bookmark this for your reference (url).  Here is how the month stacks up:

WCL - The MMA Alternative?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

WCL uses a true “ring”

That’s the way financial-backer Chuck Norris positions the fighting league, called the World Combat League.  For those not familiar, it’s similar to the IFL in that there are teams, but what is different is that it takes place in a ring, not a cage, and there is no ground fighting.  Norris has tried to differentiate it from mixed martial arts, making statements such as “Most of our fighters don’t want to get into the ground-and-pound of mixed martial arts, they want to stand up and knock their opponent down.” Norris, who touts martial arts as a positive force in troubled lives, said he hopes the league will appeal to a family audience and carve out a niche for the fighting style that made him famous.

The premise of the league sounds intriguing… (more…)

All About Couture on Spike TV Tonight

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Spike TV

It’s that tell tale sign that another UFC is upon us.  Tonight on Spike TV the hype begins with three hours of UFC coverage.

10PM - UFC Unleashed featuring Tim Sylvia vs Randy Couture
11PM - Countdown to UFC 74
12AM - UFC All Access with Randy Couture hosted by Rachelle Leah

All of this Randy Couture coverage is fantastic for the sport, he’s a great ambassador for mixed martial arts.  However, we wonder if “The Natural” were to lose on Saturday, would his fall from grace slow down the momentum MMA has achieved leading up to this title fight? Weight in with your opinion and add a comment.

Randy Couture on Jim Rome Today

Friday, August 17th, 2007

randy-couture.jpgFrom UFC.com: ESPN’s Jim Rome is Burning will be running a feature on Randy Couture as he readies for his title fight against Gabriel Gonzaga. They show how Randy trains and how his regimen helps him in the cage. He takes a rare moment to reflect on his bout with Tim Sylvia and analyzes Gonzaga’s knockout of Cro Cop. The show runs Friday, August 17 at 4:30pm ET/1:30pm PT.

Man, Randy is everywhere these days. If he wins his upcoming fight the momentum will just continue to grow. However, if he loses, will that be a step back in coverage for MMA in the mainstream? Randy is so popular not only because he’s an amazing athlete but also because he’s well spoken and likelable. What if Gonzaga takes the title? He’s a great fighter and likeable guy, but not the most well spoken fighter out there. This fight probably has more implictions than most think.

The Vera’s - The Baddest Couple on the Planet

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Kerry Vera, wife of UFC fighter Brandon Vera, is a contestant on a new reality show called ”Fight Girls” and from the video clip below we can see that like her husband, she too has some skills in the ring.  The show is very similar to UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter except the fighers hare are, you guessed it, all female.  You can catch an episode on the Oxygen network Wednesdays at 8AM.  For more info about Kerry Vera check out the Fight Girls website here.
