Stephen Quadros Picks Henderson to Win

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

MMA commentator Stephen QuadrosIt’s kind of nice to see a MMA professional actually commit to picking a winner as opposed to just saying, “if it goes to the ground, it benefits fighter A.  If they stay on their feet, then fighter B has a better chance.”  If you are professional in the sport, just call a winner and stand by it.  That’s what Stephen “The Fight Professor” Quadros has done.  For those MMA fans not familiar with Quadros, he’s been in the biz a long long time as a analyst and color commentator for organizations such as Pride, K1, ShoXC, and Cage Rage.  He carries a decent amount of respect in the community.

He talked with Budo Videos and did some straight talking regarding the UFC Championship fight between Quinton Jackson and Dan Henderson.  Some of his more interesting thoughts include,

“Frankly I’m a little curious as to why they rushed into setting up this particular match (Henderson/Jackson) so quickly. Both were stars in the organization formerly know as Pride, but relatively obscure here in the states (Quinton has since gained some degree of exposure when he destroyed the UFC®’s poster boy Chuck Liddell). One would think that they had so many options to help build the organizational “rivalry” (sigh) up, or at least the champion versus champion angle by possibly making Dan and Quinton coaches on The Ultimate Fighter “reality” TV show, or at minimum have them both fight separate matches on at least one card together and THEN, after they introduced Henderson to those who only know the post-TUF era of the sport, put them in the Octagon® against each other.”

and

“As charismatic as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is, it baffles me as to why he has not been marketed more aggressively by the UFC®. His reactive yet charming personality is tailor made for television and talk show hosts would surely find loads of ways to have fun with him as guest. But instead he’s been shipped to England and taken off pay-per-view (this UFC® will be aired free on Spike TV in the states).”

His thoughts on the Championship fight… (more…)

You’ll have to visit MMAMadness.com to find out how each of his picks will win and get an fight analysis of each UFC 74 match-up.  Click Here.

WEC Title on the Line Tonight 5/12

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

Tonight from the Joint in Las Vegas, the WEC will put on a 9 fight mixed martial arts event with the Light Heavyweight Title on the line. The World Extreme Cagefighting organization was purchased by the UFC the in January of this year and will use as a kind of “farm league” for fighters not quite UFC material…yet.
The WEC Light Heavyweight Title Fight is worth looking at because the winner will likely make a move to the UFC. James Irving, who will be fighting on the UFC 70 card, was a previous WEC champion before moving up the the UFC. A little deeper look at Doug Marshall and Justin McElfresh along with my fight prediction:

Doug Marshall is a brawler who turned pro as a heavyweight before dropping down to light heavyweight. He has heavy hands and of his seven fights, only one of them has gone past the 1st round. This could be a factor if they fight goes into the third round as Marshall’s cardio is a bit suspect. He has fought against UFC veteran James Irving and Pride and UFC veteran Lodune Sincade, losing to Irving and beating Sicade. In his fight with Irving, Marshall showed that he has one hell of a chin. Irving landed a ton of punches and knees to the head which Marshall was able to absorb. Below is a video clip of that fight.

James Irvin vs. Doug Marshall
There’s not a whole lot of informatin out there about Justin McElfresh, no video clips to be found. What is known is that after losing his MMA debut, he has rattled off five wins. Also of note, he is 6′ 6″ which is pretty damn tall for a light heavyweight. Another thing that stands out is that he trains with Rich “Ace” Franklin.
Prediction
Marshall has definitely faced stiffer competition than McElfresh with a OWLR of 2.25 compared to McElfresh’s .75 OWLR (OWLR is stat I came up with that helps to measure level of competition a fighter has faced. It stands for Opponents Win Loss Ratio, with the higher the number the better). He’s got a great chin and I don’t see McElfresh hitting any harder than Irvin, even with his reach advantage. The one thing going against Marshall is that all but one of his fights have ended in the first roung. With McElfresh training with Franklin, you have to expect he’ll come into the fight with great cardio which could come into play if the fight goes past the first round. My Pick: Marshall by KO.

Predictions - Ultimate Fight Night

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

I took a look back at some of the mixed martial arts fight predictions I have made over the year and I must say I really should have been in Vegas throwing down some big cash. I think my predictions track record speaks for itself.

Come Ultimate Fight Night live on Spike TV from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California I’ll have my eye on a few fights in particular. Admittedly there are a few fighter on the fight card who I am not familiar with and therefore will omit predictions in fight which there are scheduled.

Main EventDiego Sanchez Vs. Joe Riggs

I’m calling for an upset on this one. Just in case you weren’t convinced that Riggs in the underdog, check the voting from the UFC website. Sure Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez is undefeated and the clear favorite, but I think he will have his hands full with “Diesel.” Joe is a solid ground and pound style fighter, check out his ground KO of talented MMA fighter Kendal Grove (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vGBFD4bvyFw). Diego is a great g and p style fighter himself but if he finds himself on his back, he’s going to get beat up.

Diego’s last three fights have gone to decision. With quality fighters he is not a closer. Unless Riggs is careless on his feet, he won’t get KO’d. Riggs has faced top competition and his recent losses have come to the likes of former welterweight champion Matt Hughes, underestimated Mike “Quick” Swick, and seasoned vet Ivan Salaverry.

Joe Riggs is very hungry and has a lot to prove. Diego doesn’t seem to have the eye of the tiger he possessed a few fights ago. He didn’t take out Karo and seemed a little lackluster.

Joe Riggs by decision

Jeff Joslin Vs. Josh Koscheck
I admit I wasn’t an early fan of Koscheck’s as he wasn’t a well rounded mixed martial artist. He was and is a great wrestler and when the going got tough he’d always resort to that. Over the past few fights I’ve been very impressed. He is definitely improving and one of those great wrestlers who is looking to improve his game in other areas. For Josh his hands have gotten much better.

Joslin really hands his hands full in this match. He hasn’t fought any stiff competition. When he has lost, it was by decision. He might be a difficult fighter to KO.

Koscheck by decision

to come, Drew Fickett Vs. Karo Parisyan . . .
