Fighter Spotlight - Paulo Filho

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

Remember when Anderson Silva stepped into the octagon for the very first time and faced Chris Leban?  Most of the UFC crowd didn’t know a whole lot about him except that he fought in the Pride and was from Brazil.  The rest is history.

Most MMA fans who haven’t followed Pride FC may not be familar with middleweight Paulo Filho, but they should be.  Tonight he is making his Zuffa debut at WEC Wrekcage and like Silva is a dangerous, well round fighter from Brazil.  Filho trains with the likes of Mario Sperry and the Nogueira brothers at Brazilan Top Team and has amassed a 14-0 fight record while facing some stiff competition.  Notches in his belt include Ryo Chonan (a fighter who beat UFC champion Anderson Silva a couple of years ago), Murilo Rua, Amar Suloev, and the last guy to beat Dan Henderson, Kazuo Misaki.  Take a look at how he easily handled Misaki in his last fight:

WEC Fight Results

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

As I predicted (see previous entry), Doug Marshall defended his Light Heavyweight title last night by knocking out and out classing Justin McElfresh. Fight summary:
Marshall opened tossing hard left hooks and low kicks, while the 6’6 McElfresh shot an occasional jab or pushed out right hands. Marshall started dialing in after a couple minutes of exchanges, with nobody landing anything major, and slamming home a series of thumping shots from in close, using some effective dirty boxing to stun McElfresh, finally driving home enough shots to drop the challenger and win the bout 2:16 into the match. We should look for Marshall to head to the UFC pretty soon.
The rest of the World Extreme Cagefighting results:
Jason Miller def. Hiromitsu Miura - Decision (Unanimous)
Ariel Gandulla def. Gary Padilla Decision (Split)
Sherron Leggett def. Charlie Kohler TKO (Strikes) 2nd round
Marcus Hicks def. Sergio Gomez Submission (Guillotine Choke) 2nd round
Eric Schambari def. Art Santore Decision (Unanimous)
Ed Ratcliff def. Johnny Sampaio TKO (Knee injury) 1st round
Manny Tapia def. Brandon Foxworth TKO (Strikes) 2nd round
Tom Speer def. Sidney Silva KO (Punch) 1st round
